Big, small, simple, embellished, metallic or funky, hoop earrings have picked up an evergreen status in every jewellery lovers’ wardrobe. They are such earrings styles that have been loved and adored by women of all age since decades. What makes them one-of-a-kind and classy is their retro appeal and adaptability to newer trends that designers reimagine through their modern frame of fashion. Whether you are looking for some statement earrings for a party or hunting for some ready-to-go danglers for a weekend getaway or needing some bling for your formal wears, hoops are a solution to everything. The Trend’s Story in the Past Can we really call it a ‘Trend’ if it’s always been there? The answer is quite debatable as the effect of hoop earrings on the fashion jewellery was never minimal, not even in the past. It’s a shape that’s been a crucial part of jewellery for thousands of years and yet has skilfully gained fame over the past few. At various spring and fall shows, they were a standout accessory embellished with pearls, stones, tassels, fringes and whatnot. One of the reasons hoops are still trendy and classy is that for hairstyles that expose ears like ponytails and chignons, it is the perfect earring style to flaunt. During the middle ages and much of the Renaissance, when women wore headdresses that covered most of their hair and ears, earrings were rarely seen. And then in the 1840s and ’50s, when short hairstyles that covered the ears became popular, earrings once again disappeared. When the chignon styles took over the fame, with its unobstructed view of the ear, it became an ideal partner for the big subtle hoop earrings. The pairing even became a favoured choice for many professional-casual uniforms. And of course, how can we forget the iconic retro style of scarf and hoops combination. It is something that continues to be our go-to look for casual meet-ups and parties. The Trend this Year on Runways Hoops had been featuring in the international runways since a few years now, and last year they were seen taking a massive form. With the extra-large size and heavily elaborate designs, they were meant to be the highlight of the season. They also became a part of other micro-trends like chunky metals, pearls, feathers, beads, geometric shapes and many more. However, this year they are a bit more extra big and funkier. Although the prime style remains the same, hoops are being experimented with shells, tassels, leather, wood, big gems and as many colours as one can add on them. Runways this year saw a variety of oversized hoop earring trends than ever, and they were given a stamp of approval by celebs on the red carpets. And it was not just about a circular ring going directly into the holes of your earlobes, but there were many other styles that mixed danglers, drops, cuffs with hoops in bizarre forms. The design of half circled hoops also became popular with decorated pieces being adorned like a dangler. Double hoops are more than one could ask for while the ramps also witnessed triple or more hoops-on-hoops styling with massive sizes. Gold hoops with dangling items in them are perfect for parties and cocktail dinners. And yes, everything was not circular. It included all other possible geometric shapes, even hearts and stars. The Trend on the Streets Being women, we cannot deny the fact that all of us have one or more hoop earrings in our jewellery collection. Some of us love to wear simple gold hoops every day, but flaunting this XL hoops trend isn’t different or complicated at all. The streets styles of 2020 already got used to oversized hoops worn with tops and shirts with a variety of hairstyles. Some wear simple silver hoops with off-shoulder tops while some put them on with floral shirts or dresses. Some flaunt trendy gold hoops with their party outfits while some go overboard and rock them with leather jackets and jeans. Styling these extra-large hoops is easy with ponytail hairstyles or buns. But they also look great with loose hair, as their size is the reason any amount of hair cannot hide them. Fashionistas have also started pairing them with suits and blazers for a sophisticated and bold look. While these earrings also look good with fancy sarees, they make an excellent pair for dungarees and jumpsuits.
So, go ahead and hoop around to try this trend of oversized hoop earrings with your daily outfits.
